A neutral third party
A mediator is a neutral third party who can assist in reaching a resolution in a dispute. A mediator can help break down barriers to communication, and identify and explore solutions to areas of contention within a dispute. As the guardian of the process, the mediator will work to emphasize key concepts of mediation that empower the parties such as: fairness, flexibility, confidentiality, and self-determination.
Mediation is a non-adversarial proceeding that places decision-making authority with the parties and not the mediator. This allows the mediation process to focus on empowering parties along with their needs and interest. In this process, the mediator acts to facilitate the parties reaching a mutually-acceptable agreement.
